Giving it away… A little romance with that?

July 10th, 2010

It was a misty morning today in New England, my favorite kind of summer morning, the kind that makes me romanticize about Emily Bronte and Wuthering Heights. As I am planning a move to England in August, I found the weather particularly inspired today.

I recently entered a John Wind contest on the Maximal Art facebook fan page by sharing a memory from my wedding day in the hopes of winning two lovely pins by my favorite fabulous jewelry designer. On this lovely misty morning, as I was going through the normal routine of coffee, email, facebook and twitter (in that order) I came across a comment by John Wind who had chosen my recent submission as one of his favorites. I was so flattered that someone outside of my own little world was affected by the retelling of an event so special to me. While I was reminiscing and reading through the other entries I came across a few more stories that were just lovely. One of my favorites was submitted by a woman who had planned a beach wedding and woke on her wedding day to rain. The story is told so beautifully, I was quite touched by it.

It is of course, “wedding season” and business has been brimming with romance; custom engagement rings and wedding bands or “something olds” from my vintage selection. Though as a hopeless romantic, I always get a little attached to a young couple I am designing for, I sometimes forget to stop and really appreciate the enormity of their plan and the honor it is to be chosen and entrusted as a contributor.

So. I have decided to do something of a different variety of fabulous today. In honor of my own wonderful marriage, and my husband – who completes THIS wonderful couple; And in honor of all of the wonderful couples out there celebrating their special day or memory of their special day, I am going to again share the story of my wedding and give all of you the opportunity to do the same. Here is the fun part (and I am totally stealing this from John Wind) ANOTHER GIVEAWAY! That’s right kids, the winner will receive a $50.00 credit to use in my Etsy Shop!

So here are the rules:

1. You must be a follower of OccasionallyJane

2. You must leave a comment about your favorite wedding memory or upcoming wedding plans.

OR

3. You must visit my shop and choose an item you think would be perfect for a wedding and tell us why.

**You CAN comment (meaning enter) more than once, as long as each of your comments is about a different memory or item. You CAN comment about weddings other than your own. All comments must be submitted by Midnight EST on Saturday July 24th to be entered into the drawing. The winner will be chosen by Random.org on Sunday, July 25th at 3pm EST.

Ok, so here is my story and mock entry (I promise, I am not entering my own contest):

When my husband and I got married, since it was not my first marriage, I wanted a small wedding. Intimate and pretty, at sunset on the Autumn Equinox, somewhere outside. My husband insisted he had it under control so I let him handle it. We had been living together a while and were happy so I felt like the wedding was more of a formality anyway.
I spent the day at a spa with my best friend. I was picked up on that night in September and driven to a small B&B. I got out and was “led” to a back garden, which my husband and his brother had decorated by bringing in truckloads of mums in every fall color! The walkways were lit by candle lanterns, which led the way back to a trellis arch. Under the arch was this beautiful bench I had seen months before at an antique shop and scattered throughout the garden were statues representing every faith and denomination…
We got married at sunset by candlelight in the most beautiful garden ever. The bench is now in our backyard.

One of my favorite items from my own shop is the necklace Victorian Romance. If I’d had a June wedding, that is the piece I would have worn.

Ok, now you go…

Favorite wedding memory is the casualness of it. It was a 2nd for the both of us and we had a simple marriage done by the Justice of Peace . The JP was a friend. of ours. My husband said ” I like your smile I like your style and I love everything about you”. That was 33 years ago.
    Thanks for the wonderful giveaway

My little Brother has just been married, the wedding was March, LOL it’s actually longer than I thought. When they mentioned to me they wanted to get married on a boat, I cringed underneath my loving smile, for I’ve never been on a boat before and am not good when stuck with a lot of strangers. During their plans I avoided listening to anything to do with the boat and when I thought about it, I became nauseous, well… no, seasick is probably better. The day before the wedding, my hopes lifted, we had the worst hail storm ever. Cars were destroyed, the suburbs were flooded, the city was in chaos! My thoughts went to the boat. It would be damaged too and the wedding would be held indoors near the boat. The day of the wedding the wind was coming in hard and fast and as I walked the pier I could see the boat jiggling in the water. As scared as I was, at this point I knew it was going ahead, on the boat, and it was my choice as to whether I was going to have a happy memory of the day or a scared helpless one. The ceremony was beautiful, I even cried, it was a happy memory… end though the boat leaked onto our table from the rain and hail storm during dinner.

Psst, that Victorian Filigree Blue Topaz ring is gorgeous, it would have suited the dress I wore!

  18. LOL! Great story! I’m glad you all made it through with a happy ending!

beautiful love story, website blog and etsy shop! i heart all of these, jane! i love everything in the etsy shop and my favorites are the vintage, retro and handmade jewelry pieces. i had been praying all of my life to be blessed with a best friend, soulmate, love of my life, husband to share my life with as i was approaching fifty years old i became very proactive and bold in my search so i explored the internet match making for marriage communities! my fiance and i met by Divine inspiration and were matched up with each other through a singles looking for love website repeatedly for a year (i always deleted his profile because i thought he was too young and lived too far away!). around midnight one night just before christmas eve we met in a Christian chat room and quickly became each other’s best pen pal friend. we were engaged on valentine’s day and i moved almost 3,000 miles to live with him! we are getting married this year! because of my love of nature and blue colors are in the waters and the skies of this beautiful earth i love the 4 kt blue topaz vintage ring, vintage signed hobe blue moonglow and hb rhinestone brooch, 8 kt sapphire victorian ring, and the blue topaz drop earrings! these pieces will take care of some elements of the old adage “something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue”! blessings, love, peace and joy from melody

  21. Aww, thanks! That is the one I picked too!

  22. Melody, thank you so much! What a lovely story and comments! Thank you, thank you and good luck to you!

I love weddings. I remember in high school my best friend and I were trying to go to a school dance (either at our high school or one of the other 2 schools in town). One week there weren’t any anywhere! Trust me, we searched. So we decided to go to a concert. After the concert, we were walking toward our car and heard music coming from a church. We looked in and noticed a Mexican wedding celebration. Someone from inside grabbed our hands and invited us in to dance and celebrate. They offered us alcohol, but we told them we didn’t drink so they pulled out some soda and made us a plate of meat from a bucket. We congratulated the couple in our best Spanglish and took photos with the bride. It was amazing. I love how everyone is SO HAPPY on wedding days. I’ll never forget that day.

well…I think I`m too young to talk about marriage :p
I live in a country that still hold traditional custom for wedding and another anniversary, so I shouldn`t choose how my wedding will be. but I guess I can suggest place or what food to serve.

Before my friend got married, of course, she was purposed. I was responsible for taking photos from the moment while hiding in the bushes. It’s not a wedding memory but it was the first step for them :)

My favorite wedding memory is actually driving away from the reception with my new husband – wedding planning was soooo stressful for me that the whole thing being over was a major relief – like I could finally enjoy myself!

  38. Jenny B. says:

One more good wedding memory was my niece who was our flower girl. All she wanted to do was play on the stairs outside of the sanctuary – my sister who was my maid of honor ended up carrying her down the aisle. My niece also had a habit at the time of pointing at lights so we have some great pictures of her getting carried down the aisle pointing up at the light fixtures. Cute :)
