Giving it away… A little romance with that?

July 10th, 2010

It was a misty morning today in New England, my favorite kind of summer morning, the kind that makes me romanticize about Emily Bronte and Wuthering Heights. As I am planning a move to England in August, I found the weather particularly inspired today.

I recently entered a John Wind contest on the Maximal Art facebook fan page by sharing a memory from my wedding day in the hopes of winning two lovely pins by my favorite fabulous jewelry designer. On this lovely misty morning, as I was going through the normal routine of coffee, email, facebook and twitter (in that order) I came across a comment by John Wind who had chosen my recent submission as one of his favorites. I was so flattered that someone outside of my own little world was affected by the retelling of an event so special to me. While I was reminiscing and reading through the other entries I came across a few more stories that were just lovely. One of my favorites was submitted by a woman who had planned a beach wedding and woke on her wedding day to rain. The story is told so beautifully, I was quite touched by it.

It is of course, “wedding season” and business has been brimming with romance; custom engagement rings and wedding bands or “something olds” from my vintage selection. Though as a hopeless romantic, I always get a little attached to a young couple I am designing for, I sometimes forget to stop and really appreciate the enormity of their plan and the honor it is to be chosen and entrusted as a contributor.

So. I have decided to do something of a different variety of fabulous today. In honor of my own wonderful marriage, and my husband – who completes THIS wonderful couple; And in honor of all of the wonderful couples out there celebrating their special day or memory of their special day, I am going to again share the story of my wedding and give all of you the opportunity to do the same. Here is the fun part (and I am totally stealing this from John Wind) ANOTHER GIVEAWAY! That’s right kids, the winner will receive a $50.00 credit to use in my Etsy Shop!

So here are the rules:

1. You must be a follower of OccasionallyJane

2. You must leave a comment about your favorite wedding memory or upcoming wedding plans.

OR

3. You must visit my shop and choose an item you think would be perfect for a wedding and tell us why.

**You CAN comment (meaning enter) more than once, as long as each of your comments is about a different memory or item. You CAN comment about weddings other than your own. All comments must be submitted by Midnight EST on Saturday July 24th to be entered into the drawing. The winner will be chosen by Random.org on Sunday, July 25th at 3pm EST.

Ok, so here is my story and mock entry (I promise, I am not entering my own contest):

When my husband and I got married, since it was not my first marriage, I wanted a small wedding. Intimate and pretty, at sunset on the Autumn Equinox, somewhere outside. My husband insisted he had it under control so I let him handle it. We had been living together a while and were happy so I felt like the wedding was more of a formality anyway.
I spent the day at a spa with my best friend. I was picked up on that night in September and driven to a small B&B. I got out and was “led” to a back garden, which my husband and his brother had decorated by bringing in truckloads of mums in every fall color! The walkways were lit by candle lanterns, which led the way back to a trellis arch. Under the arch was this beautiful bench I had seen months before at an antique shop and scattered throughout the garden were statues representing every faith and denomination…
We got married at sunset by candlelight in the most beautiful garden ever. The bench is now in our backyard.

One of my favorite items from my own shop is the necklace Victorian Romance. If I’d had a June wedding, that is the piece I would have worn.

Ok, now you go…

More talk of inspiration… AND A JOHN WIND GIVEAWAY!

June 2nd, 2010

As you may already know, I am not only OccasionallyJane but also Designs In Blue Light. I have a little shop on Etsy where I sell my own jewelry designs alongside a fine collection of vintage and antique jewelry, which is my passion. I collect it, admire it, love to shop for it (finding treasures is the best!) often gasping at the beauty and craftsmanship that has lasted 50, or 200, years. I study, I belong to groups for collectors and sellers of vintage jewelry, let’s face it, I’m a NUT when it comes to the stuff. I love romanticizing about the history of something so intimate as a piece of jewelry, thinking about all the people who have loved it and imagining the stories of how it was originally acquired. That is FABULOUS.

As a friend said to me recently “I’ve collected many vintage pieces and I am inspired by the journey an artist takes and how it shows up in their work. It is often where I find inspiration.”

I have a special obsession with pins and brooches. Such elegant little pieces of art, like tiny sculptures you can wear! I think perhaps I am on a personal mission to bring back the brooch! I wear them in my hair, on hats, with jeans or when I’m all glammed up. I’ve even been known to stick one on a designer handbag from time to time.

You may recall a recent post I did on John Wind of Maximal Art; a phenomenal Jewelry Designer based in Philadelphia (Read post). John shares my passion for all things vintage AND brooches so his designs just speak to me. Every now and then I find someone who seems to see the world in a similar way and I just want to shout from the rooftops “See? Someone gets me!!!”

You can read more about John Wind here but in the meantime, check it out:

John’s early looks were heavily collage-inspired. He later moved on to using more images with resin. Currently, he is working with vintage inspired metals and stones.

And here comes the “Drum roll” part:

John Wind and Maximal Art have generously donated these three FABULOUS scatter pins (below) to OccasionallyJane, so that OccasionallyJane can give them to one of YOU! How AMAZING is that?! (…she typed while secretly wondering how to enter this contest herself….)

So here are the rules:

1. You must be a follower of OccasionallyJane (I am. Check.)

2. You must leave a comment about your favorite John Wind Pin either from the Maximal Art website

OR

3. You could make it really interesting and do some digging. Find a John Wind Pin from an earlier collection listed elsewhere on the web and send us the link! (Got it. Check.)

4. You must not be me. (Oooh! Foiled.)

**You CAN comment (meaning enter) more than once, as long as each of your comments is about a different item. All comments must be submitted by Midnight EST on Saturday June 12th to be entered into the drawing. The winner will be chosen by Random.org on Sunday, June 13th at 3pm EST.

Sooooo EASY! I should be making you work harder.

Alright. Ready. Set. GO!
